The steps involved in the IVF treatment procedure are as follows:
1. Fertility medications
Normally, a woman produces a single egg during each menstrual cycle. However, IVF needs multiple eggs to increase the chances of developing a viable embryo.
Fertility medicines consist of hormones that help stimulate the female ovaries to produce multiple eggs, known as ovarian stimulation. These medications are usually available as injections and the woman will be taught how to administer them herself.

5. Embryo culture

A single cell or group of cells from each embryo may be removed to screen for genetic disorders during this time.
6. Embryo transfer
The embryo is placed into the woman’s uterus three to five days after egg retrieval and fertilization.
The procedure involves the insertion of a catheter containing the embryo into the woman’s vagina through her cervix and up into her uterus. If the embryo sticks or implants to the womb lining, it results in a pregnancy.
Multiple embryos can be placed into the woman’s uterus at the same time to increase the chances of pregnancy. However, this could lead to multiple births as well.
7. Pregnancy test
A pregnancy test is recommended 10 to 14 days after embryo transfer to check if the IVF procedure successfully resulted in a pregnancy.
