What is Ovulation Induction?

Ovulation induction or ovulation stimulation is a treatment involving the use of fertility medications by a woman to stimulate the release of one or more eggs from her ovaries.

The process helps increase the chance of a successful pregnancy by stimulating the release of mature eggs. It is a common first-line fertility treatment recommended for couples having trouble getting pregnant.

Am I the Right Candidate for Ovulation Induction?

A woman who does not ovulate regularly or does not ovulate at all, has irregular or infrequent menstrual cycles, or has unexplained infertility is considered to be a good candidate for undergoing ovulation induction treatment if trying to get pregnant.

Ovulation induction is often the first procedural step for couples undergoing fertility treatments like IVF, ICSI, or IUI. Our experienced fertility specialists at Aksigen IVF will evaluate you thoroughly to determine if you are the right candidate for undergoing ovulation induction.

Ovulation Induction Procedure at a Glance

The ovulation induction procedure begins with a thorough evaluation by the fertility specialist to assess the woman’s menstrual cycle.

Fertility medications are then prescribed to regulate the woman’s hormone levels and encourage the growth of the ovarian follicles. Regular ultrasounds and blood tests will be done during the treatment to track the follicular development.

Once the follicles reach their desired size, an hCG injection will be given to trigger ovulation. This increases the chances of conception through timed intercourse or assisted reproductive techniques like IUI.

Choosing the Right Ovulation Induction Clinic

The choice of the right ovulation induction clinic will increase your chances of successful treatment. Look for a treatment center with experienced fertility specialists, a good success rate, and access to advanced facilities and technology.

Other factors that you must consider include the reputation of the clinic, patient reviews, easy communication, the use of personalized treatments, and the affordability of treatments.

Your chances of undergoing a comfortable ovulation induction procedure resulting in conception will increase at a good fertility clinic.

What is Ovulation?

Every female is born with one to two million immature eggs in her two ovaries. Most eggs die off naturally, but approximately 4,00,000 eggs remain by the time the female reaches puberty.

Ovulation occurs approximately 14 days before the first day of a woman’s menstrual period. Ovulation happens when a follicle, which is a fluid-filled cyst in the ovaries containing the eggs, releases a mature female egg. This egg moves into the fallopian tube, where it can mix or get fertilized with the male sperm in case of unprotected intercourse.

The time of ovulation is known as a woman’s fertile window, which means that she can get pregnant at this time. If the egg gets fertilized, it becomes an embryo and travels into the woman’s uterus (womb). If the embryo successfully implants in the lining of the uterus, the woman becomes pregnant.

In the case of women with irregular ovulation or menstrual cycles, it is difficult to know the time of their fertile window. For women who do not ovulate at all, it is impossible to get pregnant.

The medications prescribed for ovulation induction can help a woman ovulate on a more predictable and consistent schedule, increasing her chances of getting pregnant. These medicines also help improve the health of the uterus lining, making it more hospitable for the implantation of an embryo.

Who Should Undergo Ovulation Induction?

Ovulation induction is generally recommended for women who do not ovulate at all or women who ovulate but are unable to get pregnant.

A woman generally undergoes ovulation induction in the following situations:

  • imageAnovulation (absence of ovulation)
  • imageInfrequent or irregular ovulation (oligo ovulation) that causes the eggs not to be released at the proper time
  • imageAmenorrhea (absence of menstrual periods) or irregular menstrual periods due to conditions like PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), abnormal pituitary hormone levels, etc.
  • imageHyperprolactinemia (increased levels of prolactin serum)
  • imageHypothalamic issues in which the brain’s hypothalamus fails to signal ovulation
  • imageIVF or ICSI procedures
  • imageIUI procedures
  • imageOther conditions like endometriosis, PCOS, stress, obesity, thyroid problems, and other eating disorders.

Our fertility doctor at Aksigen IVF will evaluate you thoroughly to determine if you are the right candidate for undergoing ovulation induction in Mumbai.

Which Medications Are Used for Ovulation Induction?

The common medications that may be recommended for ovulation induction include the following:

Oral Medicines

These medicines are usually first recommended for women who ovulate irregularly or do not ovulate. The common types of oral medications that may be recommended for ovulation induction include:

  • image
Clomiphene Citrate (Clomid):It is the most common fertility drug recommended and works by the production of more FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) and luteinizing hormone (LH) by the pituitary gland, which helps stimulate the growth of an ovarian follicle containing the female egg.
  • image
Aromatase Inhibitors (Letrozole):This medicine is commonly used for women with PCOS. Although these medicines were earlier used to treat breast cancer, they have also been found to be useful in promoting ovulation.
  • image
Insulin-Sensitizing Agents (Metformin):These drugs are used in certain PCOS patients having prediabetes or diabetes. They help improve insulin resistance and increase the likelihood of ovulation.

Injectable Medicines

Fertility doctors generally recommend injectable medications if the oral fertility medications do not work. The medicine is injected just under the skin to boost the growth of follicles in the ovaries. The medicine injected includes:

  • image
Gonadotropins:These medicines consist of FSH or LH (luteinizing hormone) and they help stimulate the ovary to produce multiple female eggs and are, therefore, used in procedures like IVF (in vitro fertilization). Gonadotropin medicines may also include hMG (human menopausal gonadotropin). Another gonadotropin medication, hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), can also be used to mature the female eggs and trigger the release of these eggs at the time of ovulation.

How to Prepare for Ovulation Induction?

If you have been trying to get pregnant for more than a year without any success, you need to visit a fertility specialist. At Aksigen IVF, our fertility experts will first assess you thoroughly on your initial consultation visit.

After a physical examination, you will be asked about your medical history, menstrual history, and fertility history. Some tests may be recommended to check for underlying fertility problems. These tests may include:

  • image
Blood Tests:These tests may be done on specific days of your menstrual cycle to measure the FSH, LH, estradiol, and AMH (anti-mullerian hormone) levels.
  • image
Ovarian Reserve Testing:This test helps check the quantity and quality of the remaining female eggs. The ovarian reserve can usually be determined through the antral follicle count (AFC) using ultrasounds or the AMH levels.
  • image
Ovulation Monitoring using Ultrasounds and Blood testsYour ovulation will be closely monitored through ultrasound scans and hormonal assays. The growth of the ovarian follicles will be constantly monitored to determine the appropriate time for ovulation stimulation.
  • image
Hysterosalpingogram (HSG):This is a specialized X-ray that involves injecting a dye into the uterus to check for any blockages in the fallopian tubes which could prevent the sperm from reaching the mature egg.
  • image
Semen Analysis for the Male PartnerThe test helps check the quantity and quality of male sperm to help the doctor decide on an appropriate plan of treatment.

Based on the results of the diagnostic tests and assessment by our fertility specialists, you will then be offered the best ovulation induction in Mumbai if you are considered to be the ideal candidate for undergoing the procedure.

Ovulation Induction Treatment Procedure

The steps involved in the ovulation induction treatment are as follows:

  • imageThe ovulation induction treatment cycle will start on the third day of the menstrual cycle.
  • imageThe doctor will perform a blood test and ultrasound. If the ultrasound is normal and you are not pregnant, the doctor will instruct you on which medication to take and when to start taking the medication.
  • imageThe prescribed medication is usually taken between the third and seventh day or the fifth and ninth day of the menstrual cycle. The fertility doctor will let you know the exact timeline when you need to start taking the medications.
  • imageOn the 10th or 11th day of your menstrual cycle, an ultrasound will be performed to check the development of the egg. The doctor will be able to see if the follicles are developing normally with the help of an ultrasound.
  • imageWhen the follicles reach an optimal size, a trigger hCG injection may sometimes be provided to help in the final egg maturation and releasing the egg from the wall of the follicle, resulting in ovulation.
  • imageIt is recommended to have unprotected timely intercourse during the ovulation period to increase the chances of pregnancy.
  • imageAlternatively, you can undergo fertility treatments recommended by the doctor during your ovulation period, which may include one of the following:
  • 1. IUI (intrauterine insemination):The male sperm is placed directly into the female uterus by the doctor.
  • 2. IVF (in vitro fertilization):The male sperm fertilizes the female egg in a laboratory and the resultant embryo is placed into the female uterus.
  • 3. ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection):It is a modified IVF procedure in which a single male sperm is injected directly into the female egg in a laboratory and the resultant embryo is placed into the female uterus.
  • imageA pregnancy test is recommended two weeks after the completion of the procedure.
